We’ve all heard the phrase “breakfast is the most important meal of the day” right?

According to Statista, 58.3% of Canadians eat breakfast every day. Whilst considered by some to be the most important meal of the day, just over 6% of survey respondents stated that they never eat breakfast.

Keeping this in mind, Caddle asked our Daily Survey Panel about their thoughts on breakfast foods.

What are Canadians having for breakfast?

Caddle discovered that Canadians love breakfast food, with 41.5% of Canadians buying granola bars and 36.6% buying hot cereal monthly or more.

Deep Dive into Demographics

When we look at how open different generations are to trying new brands of food, the younger generations demonstrate a higher interest with 40% of Millennials and 37.7% of Gen Z trying new brands of granola bars since the pandemic, followed by 20.6% of Millennials and 20.6% of Gen Z trying new brands of hot cereal. This could be because the younger generations generally have a stronger desire to explore new food options that fit their lifestyle.

How has Canadian spending changed since the pandemic?

Surprisingly a majority of Canadians have not changed their spending habits since the pandemic. When asked how often you are purchasing hot cereal now versus before the pandemic a majority (52.3%) said no change, similarly for granola bars 50% of Canadians said there is no change.

Moreover, the dollars spent on breakfast food are likely to remain constant for a while as when asked “how often will you purchase hot cereal after the pandemic” a majority (61.8%) said no change, similarly for granola bars 63.7% of Canadians said they would not change their consumption.
