The grocery store experience has changed in the past few years, whether it’s inflation, online grocery shopping or changes in consumer preferences, and the future is still uncertain. 

According to Statista, some 65.4% of respondents felt that food prices increased much faster than their household income.

Keeping this in mind Caddle asked our Daily Survey Panel about their grocery shopping habits. 

Canadians are All for Innovation

Caddle discovered nearly three out of four Canadians are interested in interactive screens. Out of those, the ability to see price comparisons is the most desired feature by nearly half of Canadians (48.8%). If we dive deeper into the demographics, price comparison is top of the list for Boomers (55%), Gen X (51%), and Millennials (53%), whereas, for Gen Z, it is only 35%.

Caddle discovered that self-checkout is the way to go for Canadians, while checkoutless shopping remains murky. 85.1% of Canadians surveyed used self-checkout and are satisfied with the experience, while 47% of Canadians surveyed are likely to use checkoutless shopping if offered; out of these, the older generations are less likely to adopt checkoutless services.

Drones for the Future?

Caddle asked their daily survey panel If drone/robot delivery were widely available, how often they would use it, and 40.2% of Canadians are interested in drone/robot delivery, with younger generations showing more interest. Gen Z’s have the most interest, with 36% saying ‘all’ or ‘most of the time’ whereas 78% of Boomers say “Rarely or Never”.
