Canadians do not shy away from having a good time paired with quality alcohol. According to Statista, alcohol sales in Canada reached $775.2 per capita in 2020 and is expected to grow in the following years.
As we enter 2022, we certainly need reasons to celebrate – whether it’s with a glass of whiskey at a Christmas party or champagne on New Year’s Eve.
Keeping this in mind, Caddle asked our Daily Survey Panel about their thoughts on alcohol – specifically bourbon and gin.
How Frequently Do Canadians Buy Alcohol?
Caddle discovered that most Canadians (20.3%) purchase Bourbon multiple times a year as compared to only 11.6% who buy it “Annually or less frequently”. Similarly 22.5% of Canadians purchase gin multiple times a year as compared to the 14.8% who purchase it “Annually or less frequently”.
Are Canadians Loyalists when it Comes to their Favourite Alcohol Brand?
Caddle discovered that Canadians are loyal to not one but a few of their favourite alcohol brands. When asked what their approach to drinking is – 44.7% of Canadians said they “Switch between a couple of their favourite brands” for gin while 47% of Canadians switch between their favourite bourbon brands. Moreover, bourbon drinkers seem to be more brand loyal as 22.3% of them answered they were “Brand loyalists” as compared to 18.7% of gin drinkers.
Do Restaurants Affect What Canadians Buy at Retail?
We asked Canadians “How much does having an alcoholic spirit (drink or cocktail) at a bar or restaurant influence what brand you buy at retail?” and a majority of gin drinkers (31.3%) answered “No influence” and the same for bourbon drinkers as 27.2% said it has “No influence”.
However, what is interesting is that out of those who responded “Has a high influence” a majority are Gen Z for both gin (20.7%) and bourbon (23.4%).
What Encourages Canadians to be Brand Loyal?
It is obvious that everyone wants their money’s worth and alcohol is no exception. When Caddle asked their Daily Survey Panel “What are the main reasons you are loyal to a brand of alcohol?” The top reason was “Price” for gin (13.4%) as well as bourbon (12.9%).
